چکیده

Rheology of silicates (melts or super cooled as glasses) is one of the most important fields to mankind, as geological activity largely influences life. In this paper, unifying empirical models for the Non-Newtonian shear viscosity and the extensional viscosity are proposed. The models have only one parameter, the zero shear viscosity (the Newtonian plateau), and are valid for a vide range of chemical compositions

Viscosity of hydrous rhyolitic melts inferred from kinetic experiments, and a new viscosity model

Viscosity of hydrous silicate melts is essential in modeling the dynamics of magma transport and volcanic eruptions. Numerous experimental measurements of viscosity, as well as viscosity models, have been published. For general melt compositions, the classic models of either Bottinga and Weill (1972) or Shaw (1972) are still used, not because they are reliable, but because of the extreme diffic...

Silicate Melt Properties and Volcanic Eruptions

[1] Knowledge about the properties of silicate melts is needed by volcanologists and petrologists to evaluate the dynamics of volcanic eruptions and magmatic processes. These properties include the solubility and diffusivity of volatile components in silicate melts, silicate melt viscosity, and the fragmentation condition. Data and models of each property are reviewed and assessed. For rhyoliti...

Viscosities of melts in the NATO-FeO-Felon-SiO~ system and factors ~on~oiling relative viscosities of fully polymerized silicate melts

The viscosity-temperature relationships of nine melts in the NazO-FeO-Fe20&iO~ system (in equilibrium with air) have been measured in the temperature range of 145&800”C, using the concentric cylinder method. “Fe Miissbauer spectra were obtained on quenched samples and show that all melts with 220 mole% ferrite component contain ~95% Fe as tetrahedrally-coordinated ferric ions. The compositions ...

An expanded non-Arrhenian model for silicate melt viscosity: A treatment for metaluminous, peraluminous and peralkaline liquids

We present new viscosity measurements for melts spanning a wide range of anhydrous compositions including: rhyolite, trachyte, moldavite, andesite, latite, pantellerite, basalt and basanite. Micropenetration and concentric cylinder viscometry measurements cover a viscosity range of 10 to 10 Pas and a temperature range from 700 to 1650 °C. These new measurements, combined with other published da...

An experimental study on the pressure dependence of viscosity in silicate melts.

The effect of pressure on melt viscosity was investigated for five compositions along the join An(CaAl(2)Si(2)O(8))-Di(CaMgSi(2)O(6)) and four alkali silicates containing lithium, sodium, and potassium in constant ratio of approximately 1:1:1, but alkali-silica ratios are varying. The experiments were performed in an internally heated gas pressure vessel at pressures from 50 to 400 MPa in the v...
